The Level You're Avoiding Is the One Holding It

Four ways spiritual people avoid the real work, one at each level. How to find the level you're hiding behind, and why it's never the one that feels like the problem.

What Spiritual Bypassing Actually Is

One figure has always made me cringe: the spiritually enlightened person who cannot get their life together to save it. Literally.

What that person is doing has a name. Spiritual bypassing, using belief or practice or experience to avoid an unresolved wound, an unmet developmental need, or a plain human fact you would rather not feel. It runs at every one of the four levels I laid out last time, and it always moves the same direction. Down. Whatever floor you have mastered, the thing you are avoiding is one floor beneath it.

I ran protocols on everything I could find. Ho'oponopono on everyone I could think of, clearings, integrations, contracts hunted down and revoked, protocol after protocol, month after month. It looked exactly like work because it was work, and it was also the most sophisticated avoidance I have ever built. I ran the protocols so I would not have to go down and feel what they were pointing at. I wanted to feel it. I did not know how.

The avoidance wore the costume of the most disciplined practice I had.

So the four rooms below are rooms I have stood in. Find the one that sounds like you.

Every Level Has Its Own Bypass: The Law

Mastery is a respectable place to hide, and nobody questions any of it. Not the man with the perfect blood panel, not the woman who can name every defense she has, not the practitioner with a modality for everything, not the mystic with the cosmology. Every one of them is busy. Every one of them is busy one floor above the thing.

I am not pointing down at you. I am standing on the same floor.

Do not try to name the level you are avoiding, because you cannot see it, and that is what avoidance means. Name the level you are most fluent in instead. The one you are proudest of, quickest to bring up, most at home explaining. Then look one floor down from there.

The level you are avoiding is never the one that feels like the problem. That is what makes it the one.

The Body As Armor: Personal Physiology

We live in physical vessels and they matter more than the spiritual crowd wants them to. Physical health sets mental clarity, emotional range, and the raw energy available to do anything at all, and clearing deep trauma takes extraordinary physical capacity. The body is not the crude thing you rise above. It is the thing that lets the rest happen.

Insight That Never Moves: Personal Psychology

If you are reading my articles, you probably live here. Mind and emotion, conditioning, mother wound, father wound, attachment style diagnosed, defenses catalogued. Shadow work. This is the arena, and you are deep in it.

It is also where the most articulate failure in the whole field happens. People narrate their childhood with real precision, twenty years of insight, every mechanism named, and the reactions still fire on schedule. They know everything about themselves and cannot feel their own field, because the knowing lives one story above where the thing is stored. Trauma is held in the body, which means it is held in the field, and you do not think your way down there.

Insight is not change.

I would never tell you the field has all the answers. We stay too enmeshed in our own stories to see them alone, which is why a guide who can see what you are too close to see is not optional. But the more precisely you map your defenses and your wounds up here, the more you can actually release one floor down. That is why I built GroundWork.

Technique as Avoidance: Energetic Psychology

The personal development market is worth 53.8 billion dollars in 2026, projected to eighty by 2033. People are getting less happy year over year. The spending is real and the growth is real, and it’s not getting better because the field went unaddressed. The world is finally waking up to this, which is why I wrote about that in The Bridge Between Two Worlds.

Energetic Psychology starts from a single premise: you are a conscious energy field having a physical experience, not a body that generates a field. Repair the field and the rest follows. Chakras, what is stuck, the circuitry underneath the psychology, worked directly.

This is where the spiritual community clusters, and it is where the woo-woo reputation is earned. Someone clearing and toning and chelating and downloading, a new modality every month, never once staying with what surfaces long enough to feel it. The clearing is real work. It is also how they keep from reaching the thing the clearing was supposed to reach.

Without the physiology and the psychology underneath it, that person is literally ungrounded. Head in the clouds, nothing holding them down.

This is where I got stuck. I was clearing everything available to me and I still could not feel. Bouncing between three levels was its own way of never arriving. I did not get out by clearing harder. I got out by going down.

Head In the Clouds: Soul Psychology

The deepest level of the self, and most people do not need it yet. You work back and forth through the other three until this one comes forward on its own, and if you reach for it early nothing sticks. You will know when you are ready. If you are not sure, ask me.

The bypass at this altitude is the one everybody can spot. Cosmology fluent, body neglected, family unexamined, past ignored, downloads constantly, patterns unchanged. Heads so far into the clouds that ordinary people want nothing to do with them, because their reading of reality has drifted past anywhere a normal life is actually lived.

I used to say those people annoyed me. The truth is I was terrified of being one. I spent years as an engineer and they were the people I trusted least, and I could not see that my contempt was a map of my own fear.

Now I see it plainly. They found something genuinely real up there, which is exactly why they will not come down. They are doing nothing different from the athlete or the analyst or the protocol runner. They found the one level that flatters them and they moved in.

Which makes it the most respectable hiding place there is.

Some people optimize everything they can measure and never once turn toward what the measuring is protecting them from. They can tell you their calorie count for the day. They cannot tell you what drives the counting. The body gets harder and harder around a wound nobody is allowed to name.

I watch this in Eugene, where I live. Our University of Oregon athletes are phenomenal physical specimens, and nobody is working the psychological load underneath the performance. Address what is underneath and they do not just heal, they get better at the sport.

The body was never the problem.
